The song opens with electric guitar, plucking ambiguous extended chords that lend the progression an uneasy quality. The drums seem to borrow from industrial sounds with glitches and distortion, but played in Victoria’s signature lyrical style. The impressionistic lyrics seem to paint a story of someone grappling with the steady march of time, but as is usually the case for The Response, interpretation is left to the listener. There is a real sense of air and space in the mix during the verses before the song explodes with dense synthesizer and a wordless cry from the heavily effected guitar in the chorus. ‘Circles Within Circles’ is a change of pace for The Response and promises great things for the album to come.
